The York Symphony’s upcoming concert, “Carmen Meets Beethoven,” features Nancy Ives’ Immortal Beloved, a powerful piece that reimagines one of classical music’s most enduring mysteries. Inspired by Beethoven’s impassioned letter to his unnamed muse, Ives gives voice to nine women—artists, muses, and visionaries—whose lives intertwined with Beethoven’s yet were largely silenced by history. Through lush orchestration and an expressive solo performance by Concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck on violin, Immortal Beloved transforms silence into song, reclaiming these women’s voices.
The program also includes Strauss’ graceful Roses from the South, Beethoven’s lively Overture to Fidelio, and the dramatic allure of Bizet’s Carmen Suites–creating an atmosphere that moves from lighthearted charm to profound rediscovery.
